The Best... and Nothing Else! It all began in 1958 with Steve's father, Jack Currey, when he built balsa wood rafts to float the San Juan in Southern Utah. Jack Currey decided that rubber army surplus rafts were much better and did not soak up as much water as the balsa wood rafts. After a few trips, river guides realized that the Neoprene Rubber rafts needed bailing after every big rapid and at times the raft's rubber floor would tear on sharp razor-edged rocks. One such occasion on a challenging section of a difficult river, a Currey guide accidentally tore the entire rubber floor out his raft, leaving a suspended wood floor hanging from the boat frame. The accident enabled the raft to self-bail itself through the entire white water expedition, giving the passengers a dry, a safe, and a comfortable ride. Thus, river rafting history was made with the introduction of the first self-bailing rowing raft that has since revolutionized the river rafting industry. From the experience on the San Juan River with balsa wood rafts, the Currey's with beginnings on the Main Salmon River, Middlefork of the Salmon, Selway River, Yampa and Green Rivers, Cataract Canyon, and Grand Canyon, have built the largest and the safest river running company in the world. Eventually Steve broadened his river running to foreign countries, taking clients on the Bio Bio, Futaleufu, and Figueroa Rivers in Chile, the Yangtze in China, and rivers in India, Venezuela, Canada, Tibet, Costa Rica, Africa, and Russia. In partnership with his stepfather, he opened the country of Chile to fly fishing by developing a fly-out fishing lodge in Patagonia, Chile. He began traveling to areas of the world that were unexplored, visiting cultures and peoples that, in some cases, had never seen people outside their own village. He eventually became a noted explorer, accomplishing many feats of discovery and 'firsts.' His records of first descents include: 1984 - Upper Ganges, India, Alakananda River; 1986 - Chenaub River, India Himalayas; 1988 - Upper Yangtze River, China, first commercial descent; 1992 - Brahmaputra River, India (Dihang Tsangpo), first complete descent, first commercial descent; 1998 - Lower Po Tsangpo, Tibet; 1999 - Upper Po Tsangpo, Parlung Tsangpo, Tibet; 2001 - Sutlej River, India Himalayas, first commercial descent. Over the past 30 years, Steve Currey and his expedition team have taken over 1/4 million satisfied guests on their national and international river expeditions. Tragically, Steve was taken away from us very suddenly due to brain cancer in July 2006. His legacy will live on as his son and river guiding prodigy, Neal Currey, a former Army Ranger, and, Ben Morris, an experienced paddler and a former Marine scout sniper platoon commander, have now teamed up to take Currey Expedition Company to old and new destinations throughout the world.
